Career options abound for CPA members

CPA qualified graduate accountants have access to a vast range of career opportunities as well as the opportunity to earn “good money” says accounting industry leader Alex Malley.

Mr Malley, CEO of CPA Australia, one of the world’s leading accounting bodies, told CareerOne that employment prospects for its members had remained solid throughout the GFC.

“It’s because the CPA skill set is extremely flexible and allows our members to work in the accounting or commercial sector in a variety of different positions,” he explained.

“The designation is also globally recognised, so it’s a passport to work in other parts of the world.”

According to Mr Malley salaries in the accounting industry remained solid through the downturn but they were starting to see more growth.

“Accountants are in demand so people are commanding good salaries as a result,” he said.

His advice to accounting graduates trying to figure out what they want to do with their career was to be very selective with their choice of work.

“Your career options are limitless but some people can be more focused on the name of their employer rather than want they really want to do or are interested in doing when looking for a job,” he said.

“In my experience as a former accountant and as a mentor, the people who do best are the people who stay focused on what they want to do.”

To find out more about the employment opportunities and other benefits of becoming a CPA qualified member attend CPA Australia’s Global Opportunities 2010.

The events will take place nationally through out March and are open to students or young professionals already working in the industry who may be considering a career change.

Attendees will be able to speak to leading employers from Australia and overseas to find out more about potential employment opportunities, the requirements of suitable candidates, the job application process and other career tips.
