Q What is career counselling?
A At this time of the year, many people, especially VCE students, look to career counsellors to help them make decisions about their post-school options.
I am not sure if many people know what career counselling actually is. Career counselling is often misunderstood by some people. To understand what is meant by the term, we need to know the differences between career counselling and career information. Career counsellors can provide both these services.
- Career counselling is about assisting people to identify their individual career concerns.
- Career information is providing people with job descriptions.
- Career counselling focuses on encouraging people to manage their careers.
- Career information relates to details about prerequisites, scores, courses and qualifications.
- Career counsellors assist clients to own their career decisions.
- Career information covers costs, remuneration and financial support linked to educational and vocational choices.
- Career counsellors serve as facilitators who use a broad range of insights, strategies and experiences to assist individuals to make career decisions.
- Career information focuses on employment trends and related matters.
- Knowing the difference between the two is important when considering your future.
