Do photos belong on a resume?

The answer is no! You should definitely not include a photo of yourself on your resume

Why not?

A photo takes up valuable space on your resume. This space could be much better utilised highlighting your key skills, achievements, awards and work experiences.

Secondly, most resumes these days go straight into an electronic recruitment system and are read on screen by recruiters and hiring managers. By the time it gets to that point, your photo may not look like you anymore.

And the big reason … including a photo can be used as a basis for discrimination. Whether conscious or unconscious, prejudices cause people to make assumptions based on race, age, disability and gender to name a few.

Your resume is the tool which will help you to secure an interview – you need to keep the decision makers focused on your skills and experience rather than what you look like. (The only exception is models or actors applying for a modelling or acting job).

Save your photo for your LinkedIn profile and use it for networking purposes. Even then – make sure it is a professional shot!
