The Senior Research Officer is required, as part of a secretariat team, to undertake detailed and complex research and analysis, contribute to the drafting of committee reports, and prepare briefing papers and other background material. They also provide administrative and research support to other secretariat teams and assists in organising public hearings, both locally and interstate.
The Senior Research Officer will liaise with senators and their staff, public servants and key officials from various organisations, departments and agencies and act as a point of contact for inquiry witnesses. As such, high-level communication skills, including the ability to exercise tact and judgement, are essential in this position. They must also demonstrate well-developed research, analytical and writing skills and the ability to work to consistently high standards.
This position requires the occupant to undertake travel for committee hearings.
Reasonable additional hours may be required. The occupant of this position must be willing to work overtime as required and in accordance with the Senate sitting pattern. Annual leave will not generally be granted during these periods.
