Residue Storage and Industrial Earthworks Civil Engineering Draftsperson

Role Overview

The Residue Storage and Industrial Earthworks Civil Engineering Draftsperson prepares detailed civil engineering drawings, plans, sections, technical schedules, and as-constructed documentation in support of engineers and senior design personnel. The position specialises in residue storage and associated industrial civil infrastructure, including containment embankments and wall lifts, retaining structures and buttresses, earthworks, underdrainage, decant pipework, and underground services. Using approved engineering design information, survey data, and site records, the role translates technical requirements into coordinated construction, tender, excavation-planning, and quality-assurance drawing packages.

Key Responsibilities

1. Planning, Engineering Interpretation, and Preparation

• Review engineering design drawings, specifications, site surveys, existing service records, and work instructions to establish drafting requirements and deliverables.
• Interpret topographic and as-constructed survey data, reduced levels, coordinates, chainages, contours, and existing site conditions for incorporation into civil engineering drawings.
• Establish drawing files, relevant references, layouts, legends, scales, and documentation standards in line with project and company requirements.

2. Specialised Civil Engineering Drafting and Documentation

• Prepare general arrangement plans, detailed layouts, profiles, cross-sections, and construction details for residue storage embankments, retaining-wall lifts, buttresses, ramps, berms, and related civil earthworks.
• Develop detailed underdrainage, drainage, and decant drawings, including HDPE pipe and draincoil alignments, diameters, connection and tie-in details, invert levels, grades, and minimum cover requirements based on approved designs.
• Prepare and revise earthworks drawings showing existing and proposed surfaces, contours, crest levels, batter slopes, grading, cut-and-fill extents, and associated quantity tables.
• Produce excavation and dig-permit services plans showing known underground and above-ground services, proposed work boundaries, service interfaces, and potential conflicts for engineering and site review.
• Prepare setting-out information and supporting schedules, including coordinates, reduced levels, pipe quantities, drawing notes, and section references for construction coordination.

3. Survey Integration, Quality Assurance, and As-Constructed Records

• Use survey and as-constructed information to prepare QA plots, long-sections, and comparative drawings for underdrainage, decant installations, retaining walls, and related civil works.
• Document design levels, surveyed as-constructed levels, grades, and variances in tabulations and drawings for engineer review; identify discrepancies without independently certifying design or construction compliance.
• Incorporate redlines, approved design updates, and review comments, and maintain drawing accuracy, traceability, and issue status.

4. Technical Coordination, Quality Control, and File Management

• Coordinate drawing interfaces among earthworks, liner boundaries, access roads, pipelines, civil services, and adjacent infrastructure; flag potential conflicts or missing information to the responsible engineer or senior drafter.
• Check drawing dimensions, coordinates, annotations, levels, scales, sheets, and cross-references against source information and applicable project specifications.
• Maintain version-controlled CAD files, revision registers, drawing issue records, and supporting technical documentation; liaise with engineers, surveyors, supervisors, and other project personnel.

Technical Systems and Capabilities

• AutoCAD: Detailed civil engineering drafting, layouts, profiles, sections, schedules, and revision management.
• Autodesk Civil 3D: Surface and contour information, grading and earthworks representations, profile/section inputs, and coordinated civil drawing preparation.
• Propeller: Review and interpretation of drone-survey surfaces, terrain information, and site data for drafting and QA support.
• Nearmap: Review of aerial imagery and site context to assist infrastructure identification and drawing coordination.
• Applied Civil Drafting Skills: Interpreting survey coordinates and reduced levels; preparing chainage, grade, invert-level, and as-constructed variance tabulations; identifying services interfaces.

Qualifications and Experience

• Relevant qualification in civil engineering, civil engineering drafting, or a closely related discipline.
• At least one (1) year of relevant post-qualification experience in civil engineering drafting consistent with the role and applicable occupational requirements.
• Practical civil engineering drafting experience using AutoCAD; capability with Civil 3D and interpretation of engineering and survey data.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare detailed civil plans and sections for earthworks, retaining structures, drainage, underground services, or comparable civil infrastructure.
• Understanding of drawing QA, document control, construction interfaces, and the need to work under appropriate engineering direction.
• Experience in residue storage, industrial infrastructure, tailings, or water-management earthworks is highly desirable for assigned projects.

Working Conditions

Predominantly office/CAD-based work, with site visits and coordination at operational industrial locations as required by project needs and applicable inductions.
