The Opportunity
The Research Officer will contribute to collaborative research projects between the Garvan-Weizmann Centre for Cellular Genomics, UNSW Lowy Cancer Research Centre, and The Kinghorn Cancer Centre. This project involves the development of microfluidics for novel blood-based liquid biopsy technology followed by blood processing and cellular analyses.

The Research Officer will work under the guidance of Dr Omid Faridani to isolate and analyse circulating tumour cells (CTC) and circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) from pancreatic cancer patients.

This is a 1-year full-time position with the possibility to extend.

Key Responsibilities

Designing, manufacturing and testing various microfluidic chips for focusing and isolation of rare cells

Designing and carrying out statistical analyses to assess the performance of microchips.
Collaborating closely with members of the Garvan-Weizmann Centre for Cellular Genomics, UNSW Lowy Cancer Research Centre, and The Kinghorn Cancer Centre, including attending regular conference calls and individual meetings with members of those teams.
Collecting and processing patients' blood in a reasonable timeframe.
Producing results, generating publication-quality images and text, and leading the development of peer-reviewed publications.
Presenting research methods and results at national and international conferences.
Producing and submitting fellowship and other funding applications.
Supervising honours and postgraduate research students.

About You

A fresh PhD in Biomedical Engineering, or a related field

Outstanding communication skills, including both oral and written presentation for a variety of audiences, being able to present research data at national/ international scientific conferences and to contribute to and lead papers, grants, and technical reports.
Strong engineering and technology development skills including synthesis and fabrication of biological materials, materials structure analysis methods, microscopic analysis methods (e.g. scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy), Image analysis methods and ability to develop related software.
Solid theoretical and in-depth working knowledge on polymers testing in the laboratory together with a proven experience in conducting wet chemistry experiments and chemical synthesis through various techniques.
Design and manufacturing of medical devices and microdevices, MEMS and NEMS, microfabrication, 3D-printing, photolithography, soft lithography. Expertise with computer-aided design and drafting software such as AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
Experience with cancer cell and analysis techniques including flow cytometry, cell sorting using FACS and MACS, gene and protein expression analysis, microscopic imaging, histology, pathology, gene profiling, western blot
Experience with one or more programming languages (MATLAB/Python / C++)

Previous experience with scientific and medical writing and a strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
