• Teamwork and a customer-centric approach to service-excellence This 2-year contract role is for a lawyer with a strong background in public and administrative law with a focus on environmental law and regulatory practice.

The position will work as part of a highly skilled legal team in the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, working with the department's seven functional groups and Solar Victoria to support the delivery of priority policy initiatives, programs and operations to the Victorian community in a way that both optimises success and minimises and mitigates risks for government.

The successful candidate will be required to work with minimal supervision in some of the following key practice areas: administrative law and statutory interpretation, natural resources and environment, fire and emergency management, litigation and dispute resolution. The role's general government legal practice will also reach into areas of specialisation including planning, property (Crown land use and development), energy, building and commercial law, utilising candidate's transferable skills in general statutory interpretation and sound judgement and analysis.

A focus on teamwork and a customer-centric approach to service-excellence is essential. Accountabilities include the provision of strategic legal advice and litigation management and extend to designing effective legal frameworks through supporting the delivery of the department's legislative program.

Specialist/Technical Expertise

An Australian lawyer within the meaning of the Legal Profession Uniform Law (Victoria), holding or eligible to hold an Australian practising certificate.
Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice and litigation management on complex issues with minimal supervision in some of the following key practice areas: administrative law and statutory interpretation, natural resources and environment, fire and emergency management, litgation and dispute resolution.
Experience in either broader general in-house government legal practice or some of the department's areas of specialisation (planning and environment, contracting and procurement, infrastructure projects, property (Crown land use and development), energy, building) is desirable but not essential.
Experience in developing and delivering bills and regulations is desirable but not essential.

This is a fixed term position for a period of 2 years.
