About the branch

The Police Advisory Branch provides legal services, strategic advice and representation to the Chief Commissioner of Police and, by extension, all Victoria Police personnel across the State. The branch is involved in a diverse range of matters, including but not limited to:

Criminal law, police duties, powers and responsibilities;
Statutory interpretation, criminal disclosure obligations and subpoenas;
Administrative law, privacy and information sharing;
Forensic procedures and intervention order applications; and
Summary prosecutions and emergency management.

About the roles

We are currently looking for two experienced lawyers to join the VGSO as a Senior Solicitors in our Police Advisory Branch.

Ongoing role:

The successful candidate for the ongoing role will almost exclusively be working on matters relating to the Royal Commission into Management of Police Informants, including litigation and public interest immunity claims.

Fixed-term role:

The fixed-term role is a parental leave contract which will go through to May 2021. The successful candidate will be undertaking a role in the core business area of the Branch and performing the broad range of duties as specified above, which involves providing legal services, strategic advice and representation to the Chief Commissioner of Police.

About the successful candidates

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience providing oral and written advice, carrying out complex legal research and analysis, advocating in various jurisdictions, working collaboratively in a team and building positive relationships with stakeholders.

You will have demonstrated experience working on complex litigation with tight timeframes and an understanding or willingness to learn about the principles and practice of law in the following areas:

Police powers, duties and responsibilities;
Administrative law and public interest immunity claims; and
Discipline and integrity, privacy and information sharing.

Please note a requirement of this role is holding a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance or be willing to obtain one.
