The Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) designs and implements Australian Government policy and programmes to protect and strengthen our agriculture, water resources, the environment and our heritage. Parks Australia is a part of the DAWE and jointly manages Kakadu National Park (KNP) with the Traditional Aboriginal Owners in accordance with the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), the Kakadu lease agreements, the Kakadu National Park Management Plan 2016-2026 and other documents.

The responsibilities of the Country & Culture Section (C&C Section) include the protection of KNP’s biodiversity by managing threats, including weeds, ferals and conducting a significant fire programme, and implementing and assisting significant species research and programmes.

The Role/Duties

As part of the C&C Section provide leadership to achieve the best practice management of the biodiversity and values of World Heritage and Ramsar listed KNP by:

protecting the biodiversity and natural values of KNP and help design and undertake the KNP threatened species recovery management programme,
designing threatened species projects such that the data collection and analysis methods are appropriate, ethical, scientifically robust, and able to withstand peer review,
with other members of the C&C Section, organising and participating in biodiversity survey field trips, often in remote areas (must be willing to fly in a helicopter, travel by boat). These will include leading vertebrate, invertebrate, and vegetation surveys, and assisting in feral animal management, weed management, and cultural heritage maintenance,

• working with Traditional Owners to determine projects designed to achieve healthy Country, and engaging with other stakeholders, including researchers, KNP and DAWE staff, NT government staff, and others, and

manage an operational unit including overseeing budgets, assets, workplace health and safety, rosters, and human resources.

This role requires significant consultation and liaison with Traditional Aboriginal Owners, as well as scientists, contractors, and other internal and external stakeholders.

The Ideal Candidate/Skills & Experience

Tertiary Degree in Ecology, Zoology, Botany, or similar. A post graduate degree would be an advantage
Demonstrable, on-ground experience in threatened species or biodiversity management
A strong cross cultural awareness and the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people is essential.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for any position in the Department you must be an Australian Citizen.
You must undergo and satisfy a National Police History Check
This position also involves working with Children and the successful applicant must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate Working with Children Check.
This position is an ‘Identified’ position which signifies that the role has a strong involvement in issues relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The successful applicant must have an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and an ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander People.

Also, the successful applicants will be required to:

Hold a current driver’s licence and have completed, or are able to undertake, 4WD vehicle training,
Willingness to travel in remote areas, including via helicopters, boats or 4WDs. Some out of hours or weekend work may be required.
Have a reasonable level of fitness,
Wear a uniform and relevant PPE,
Hold a current First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain this qualification,
Work to an agreed performance development plan and participate in training activities, and
Meet requirements and conditions of the current Enterprise Agreement and the APS Code of Conduct.
