About us

The Department of Justice and Community Safety is responsible for the supervision of children and young people in the criminal justice system and for providing strategic advice and delivering strategic outcomes to address youth crime and reduce offending.

The Aboriginal Youth Justice unit is responsible for the design and development of policy, strategy and program responses for young Aboriginal people in contact with or at risk of contact with the Youth Justice system.

As a member of the Aboriginal Youth Justice unit, the Manager, Aboriginal Youth Justice Operations plays a critical role in helping the Department of Justice and Community Safety achieve its goal of reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal Victorians in the criminal justice system.

About the role

As Manager, Aboriginal Youth Justice Operations, this position will lead and manage the Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO) program and provide direct oversight and supervision to the Aboriginal Liaison Officer Team Leader.

A fundamental responsibility of this role is to oversee the ALO program in the custodial setting, including establishing ALO program performance targets and evaluating program outcomes. This role requires the incumbent to work closely with community elders and the broader Aboriginal community, as well as provide input to high policy forums, advocating for Aboriginal Young People in custody. As a key leadership position, participation in strategic planning and decision-making, including contributions to the development and implementation of the Aboriginal Youth Justice Strategy, will be of high priority, particularly regarding issues affecting Aboriginal young people in custody.

To be successful in this role you will have:

Excellent stakeholder management capabilities, with the ability to communicate sensitively with a diverse range of stakeholders; from senior government officials to members of the Victorian Aboriginal community cultivating partnerships and providing positive leadership and guidance,
Superior written communication skills, with the ability to develop Ministerial briefs, discussion papers and correspondence and provide authoritative expert advice on complex and sensitive issues and strategic analysis.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it including issues for Aboriginal youth
Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal Youth Justice and the Aboriginal sector
Demonstrated working knowledge of Government legislation, priorities and directions

It is desirable to have a tertiary qualification or experience in fields related to community programs, youth justice policy, community engagement and partnerships, program support, youth work, community services or health.

A current driver’s licence is required due to the need to work across different locations.

A current Employee Working with Children Check (WWCC) card is required and will need to be provided prior to commencing employment.
