Position Summary: A vacancy exists in the Social Work Department for a highly motivated social worker with appropriate qualifications, knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. This position is for a qualified Social Worker who identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island and the purpose of the position is aligned to the SVHNS Aboriginal Health Plan and the St Vincent's Health Australia National Reconciliation Action Plan

The successful Social Worker Level 1-2 is responsible for the provision of a comprehensive social work service to patients / clients and their families, liaison with other health care professionals within St Vincent's Hospital Sydney and with external agencies in the areas of clinical allocation.

In this position based within Cancer Services you will be part of a team of Cancer Social Workers (Bone Marrow Transplant/ Haematology/ Medical Oncology/ Radiation Oncology/ Head and Neck Surgery/ Breast Cancer ) providing high level comprehensive social work service within a multi-disciplinary team Monday to Friday for inpatients and outpatients. The position will involve working closely with the St Vincent's Hospital staff, community, government and non-government organizations and service providers. You will be working full time, providing consultation, advocacy, clinical assessments and counselling to patients, families and carers. The social worker will contribute to complex care and discharge planning for vulnerable patients. The successful social worker shall provide clinical cover for colleagues as required. You will also be providing consultation to team members and education for patients and staff to enhance bio-psychosocial learning.

Social Work in the Cancer stream will be a primary allocation but with a need for flexibility to work according to clinical demand and priority. In this position based at St Vincent's Hospital you will be part of the Social Work Department providing high level social work services within a multi-disciplinary service. The position will involve working closely with the St Vincent's community, government and non-government organizations and service providers.

This position also involves capacity for initiating and participating in research and quality improvement as well as participation in the wider social work department activities. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in the program of Professional Development and Supervision as conducted by the Social Work Department SVHS. The successful applicant shall also be trained for and participate in the On Call Social Work crisis roster for SVHS.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent's Health Australia.

Degree in Social Work and eligible for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) with evidence of clinical experience in a tertiary hospital or health related field as a practising Social Worker with inpatients and outpatients with a cancer diagnosis.

The social worker is to be of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander background. An applicant's race is a genuine occupation qualification and is authorized by Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW)

Demonstrated ability to work as a member of multidisciplinary teams in a high demand environment with competing priorities with sound liaison, negotiation, time management, computer, written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated clinical skills, knowledge and/or experience in bio-psychosocial assessment, counselling, therapy interventions, case management, advocacy and discharge planning.

Demonstrated knowledge and/or experience of crisis intervention, adjustment to illness, short term solution focused intervention, and grief and loss.

Ability to undertake or contribute to research/projects/quality and education activities within the designated specialties and social work services.

Ability to participate in an extended hours on call service
