Course Overview

The course contains knowledge and skills across information systems, web and software development, machine learning, databases and big data, enterprise cloud migration, cloud enterprise application development and computer networks. The course is applied in its focus and prepares students for key vendor certifications that are relevant to IT industry employment.

The La Trobe Associate Degree of Applied Cloud Technology has been purpose-built for the cloud computing sector, which is currently enjoying rapid growth, and incorporates 6 highly regarded industry certifications (4 of which are Amazon Web Services specific) within the degree qualification.

Duration and Study Load

  • You can complete your Associate Degree of Applied Cloud Technology in two years with the flexibility online learning gives you. Studying 30 hours per week on average should see you successfully complete your qualification within this timeframe. Each year’s assessments must be completed and marked within each 12-month time limit. You can complete your studies after years 1, 2 or 3 with a La Trobe qualification.
  • Part-time study options are also available.

Delivery

This qualification has been developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The 100% online delivery method by Didasko enables new sector entrants, career changers and existing IT workers to undertake learning in a sensible and convenient manner. It allows you to combine online studies with early entry to the workforce and/or career enhancement, whilst continuing online study.

Entry Requirements

For admission to this course, one of the following is required:

  • Completion of Year 12, with a score in English of at least 25, or
  • An equivalent academic level achievement, or
  • Work experience after leaving school
    • Two years if completing a business degree
    • One year if completing an IT degree

All students are required to undergo the online Didasko Pre-enrolment Assessment and achieve a pass mark of 60%.

Please note that this course is delivered 100% online so is not available to individuals in Australia on a Student Visa (Subclass 500) or Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485).

Recognition of Prior Learning

Those of you who have studied at tertiary level elsewhere, or who have relevant studies or work experience*, may be eligible for advanced standing (credit) towards your online La Trobe University qualification. Each college has specific policies in respect to the number and type of subjects and work experience it is willing to accept for advanced standing (credit) purposes.

We will inform you of the process for advanced standing at enrolment. However, if at some later point you believe you are eligible for advanced standing, please advise your Student Experience Team as soon as possible. It is preferable that you have advanced standing approved for a subject prior to starting it. Advanced standing must be approved before going through census for that subject.

Materials

All study resources (content and assessments) will be provided as part of the course. You will need to supply the following.

  • A good, reliable internet connection
  • Desktop/laptop computer
  • Webcam
  • Sound capabilities (microphone/speakers)
  • 64bit CPU capable of virtualisation (VT-x/AMD-v) with at least 4 cores (either an Intel core i5/i7 or an AMD FX-61XX or AMD FX-81XX)
  • Minimum 8GB RAM (recommended 16GB RAM or more)
  • Minimum 150GB free HDD space (internal or external) cloud storage is encouraged for backups but shouldn’t be included as ‘Free HDD Space’
  • 20GB of download allowance per month from your ISP
  • 64bit operating system: Windows/Mac/Linux

CSE2VVXVirtualisation for the Cloud

This subject provides an understanding of virtualisation concepts and exposure to different virtualisation solutions. Students will utilise this knowledge to design, implement and manage a virtualisation solution for a given scenario. The practicality of using virtualisation on cloud is particularly emphasised.

CSE2ADXApplication Development in the Cloud

The focus of this subject is the skills and knowledge required to develop applications on the cloud platform. The subject provides information on creating applications, using communication protocols, web connectivity and the application of different techniques. Key concepts of application development on the cloud such as design, debug, develop and deploy are also covered.

CSE2OSXOperating Systems

In this subject, you are introduced to modern operating systems and their major components. You will learn these concepts by working on the Linux operating system. You interact with the Linux operating system using advanced command-line processing and basic shell scripts. Process and memory management, file systems and several other concepts are also covered.

CSE2CPXManaging Projects in the Cloud

This subject focuses on the skills and knowledge required to manage information and communications technology projects in the cloud. The subject takes a practical approach by taking students from the project planning stage to the project closure stage. It covers conducting a feasibility study, how to establish and work effectively in a project team, financial planning, project management tools and software, and project management methodologies. It provides students with an opportunity to gain practical skills and knowledge in using various project management tools that are available in the cloud.

CSE2DMXDiscrete Mathematics for Computer Science

This subject is an introduction to discrete mathematics. These concepts are useful in several branches of computer science as computers operate in discrete binary states. Among the topics covered are: sets, functions, relations, counting, sequences, modular arithmetic and Big-O notation. All these topics are central to the application of mathematics in electronics and computer science.
