{"id":549,"date":"2018-04-30T23:48:15","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T23:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/careerone.com.au\/career-advice\/?p=549"},"modified":"2018-07-12T04:22:21","modified_gmt":"2018-07-12T04:22:21","slug":"is-it-time-for-a-facebook-vacation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.careerone.com.au\/career-advice\/news\/is-it-time-for-a-facebook-vacation","title":{"rendered":"Is it time for a Facebook vacay?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s 15,000,000 monthly Facebook users could do with a break \u2013 a five day one to be precise.<\/p>\n<p>New research from the Australian Catholic University and the University of Queensland has found a short-break from Facebook can significantly reduce a person\u2019s level of cortisol \u2013 a key hormone related to stress.<\/p>\n<p>However, study participants also reported lower feelings of well-being after quitting the social media platform \u2013 excited to log back in once the test period concluded.<\/p>\n<p>ACU senior lecturer Stephanie Tobin from ACU\u2019s School of Psychology said participants who were not using Facebook probably missed being able to share content and react to their friends\u2019 content online.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis type of active Facebook use is associated with greater social connection and well-being,\u201d she says, suggesting mixed results could indicate that temporary breaks from Facebook \u2013 rather than complete \u2013 are likely best for overall health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are pros and cons to taking a break from Facebook,\u201d Tobin says. \u201cFurther research is needed to understand when and for whom a break might be beneficial.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The study participants, which included 138 active Facebook users, were either instructed to\u00a0give up Facebook for 5 days while the other group continued to use Facebook as normal. Stress and well-being, as well as salivary cortisol, were measured before and after the test period.
