Have you heard of Seagull Management? Seagull managers fly in, make a lot of noise, poop on everyone, then fly out.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This concept was popularized through Ken Blanchard\u2019s book called, \u201cLeadership and the One Minute Manager.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Seagull managers drop in only when there is a problem.\u00a0They blame everyone else and criticize others.\u00a0They contribute very little to the actual solution to the problem.<\/b>\u00a0When things are going well, they rarely offer praise.\u00a0Instead, they draw attention to themselves to make them look good. \u00a0The seagull style of management may be indicative of a manager who is untrained, inexperienced or newly-appointed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A Seagull Manager in Action<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

A friend of mine recently quit his job. Why? Because he was working for a seagull manager.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He had an excellent career and he was head hunted to work for this company.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But it became clear rather quickly that it wasn\u2019t a good fit. The manager would change priorities daily, get unnecessarily mad, and drag his staff through the mud.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The manager also didn\u2019t treat people very well in general.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He once visited a restaurant.\u00a0His company owned the building the restaurant was in.\u00a0He went to the counter to order some food.\u00a0The attendant asked for payment.\u00a0And the manager got upset at the attendant.\u00a0He said:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t you know who I am? I own this place and my food is free.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The manager grabbed his food stomped out.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My friend couldn\u2019t take it anymore.\u00a0He especially disliked Mondays.\u00a0The reason is that the manager would be upset by something on Friday.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The manager would expect everyone to deal with it over the weekend.\u00a0Then on Monday the manager would have forgotten about it.\u00a0It wasn\u2019t important anymore.\u00a0My friend was left feeling frustrated because he just wasted his weekend working on something that wasn\u2019t necessary anymore.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So, my friend quit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t Work for a Seagull Manager<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

We only get one life.\u00a0Let\u2019s not waste it working for a seagull manager.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After my friend quit, the manager begged my friend to return.\u00a0So, my friend did, briefly.\u00a0He was hoping the manager would have change.\u00a0But the manager didn\u2019t.\u00a0So, then my friend left for good.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Working with a manager like this is demoralizing.\u00a0It affects our lives in some deep ways.\u00a0The pain caused by a bad manager can even spill over into your personal life.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Managers should be so much better than this.\u00a0If your manager acts like this, encourage him to change.\u00a0But if he doesn\u2019t, then look for a better job with a better manager.\u00a0Life is just too short not to.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
