Career coach and expert resume writer, Karalyn Brown, says a brief line is all that is needed to cover off on a redundancy in a cover letter. \u201cEmployers don\u2019t need a lot of explanation they know there\u2019s a financial crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Brown said what was important was that job applicants used the correct terminology and made it clear that it was not \u201cjust them\u201d who were made redundant.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t write, \u2018I\u2019ve been made redundant,\u2019 as it\u2019s not you but the role that has been made redundant. You should say, \u2018I was retrenched\u2019 and then refer to the other people who were made redundant so; \u201cI was retrenched along with a number of people in my department\u2019,\u201d says Ms Brown.<\/p>\n
Howard Searle, director of recruitment company Career Path Pty Ltd, said that while many employers \u201cskim read\u201d or ignore the cover letter, it is important to create the right initial impression \u2013 \u201cjust in case.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cKeep the cover letter neat, succinct and correctly spelt and punctuated. Don\u2019t overload it with details of your redundancy as it sounds apologetic and starts the process \u2018cap in hand\u2019. Be self-assured and convinced of your value,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Rob Davidson, founder and joint managing partner of Davidson Recruitment, said job hunters should be thinking about the person who would be reading their cover letter.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are going to be wading through more CVs and cover letters than ever and are more likely to be under resourced themselves, so it\u2019s important to be brief and to the point,\u201d Davidson advised.<\/p>\n
He said the cover letter should include why the individual wanted the job, why they believed they were suited to the job and two to three bullet points regarding relevant previous achievements.<\/p>\n
