QBuild’s remote posting offers holistic change

Tony Ivers loves life in regional Queensland

When QBuild's Tony Ivers made the transition from a busy working life in South-East Queensland to a posting in Mount Isa in the far western corner of the State he didn't expect the change would be so holistic.

An office-based employee looking after workplace health and safety, apprentices, plant and equipment, training, rehabilitation and WorkCover, Mr Iver's role is diverse and challenging but balanced by the benefits of living and working in a regional environment.

QBuild is part of the Department of Public Works in Queensland. It is a commercialised business unit responsible for being the leading provider of construction and strategic building maintenance services for the Queensland Government. A big role in a big state.

Mr Ivers said what started out as a desire for a simple lifestyle change has delivered more than he had ever anticipated.

"Mount Isa is a wonderful place to live and work. I find the people honest and polite, there is a club or society for every activity imaginable, no water shortage, no pollution, no traffic lights, longer sunlight and it takes me two minutes to get to work each day," he said.

"It is fantastic to be so close to the real Australian outback and I'm enjoying the environment with the gulf fishing and the wildlife such as crocs, pigs and roos," Mr Ivers said.

For those not from Australia a "roo" is a Kangaroo and the crocodiles and the pigs Mr Ivers refers to are both big and wild.

Mr Ivers role at QBuild has also given him the opportunity to make a positive impact on the community.

"The challenge of delivering services to a remote area is extremely fulfilling because at times you get the sense that beyond South-East Queensland, other parts of the State are forgotten," he said.

"In my job I am able to work with Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth to open up opportunities in this area, in Queensland, and both nationally and internationally in terms of where a career in construction can take them.

"Helping others to reach their potential is incredibly rewarding and enjoyable."

Mr Ivers said he highly recommends the change of pace and lifestyle and believes that remote area placements provide great opportunities.

In addition to providing the opportunities for advancement, it's a chance to really find out about yourself, in a confronting environment where nothing is ever out of view."
