Persistence pays off

It took Mathew Heaver six months and 35 rejection letters before he landed his first graduate role - but he admits it was worth the wait.

All it took was a flight from Melbourne to Brisbane on Virgin Blue to convince him of the company he wanted to work for.

"I've always perceived Virgin Blue as a fun, vibrant and friendly organisation where both guests and the employees are valued - that was important to me," he said.

Heaver was selected as Virgin Blue's first finance graduate in December last year, beating a field of around 250 applicants.

"I love going to work, the people and the culture is just what I expected," he said.

He puts his job success down to finding a company that truly matched what he was looking for.

"The more traditional graduate external audit programs are very structured. Virgin Blue's offers more flexibility and allows personal preference and choice," he said.

The 23-year-old admits his job search journey was "daunting" and "de-motivating". He recalled getting 16 rejection letters in one week, but it didn't deter him, he just kept on applying.

"Previously, I hadn't researched the organisations well enough to see if they matched what I wanted. So, when they where asking me questions, I was answering them truthfully - that didn't match their profile."

Heaver, who completed a double degree in commerce and management at Ballarat University, believes it important to have interests and hobbies outside of work.

"They not only broaden your horizons but also help develop your identity. That is what a lot of companies are seeking today," he said.

His advice to new graduates is to stay patients and focused. "Keep trying. There is very stiff competition out there for graduate programs, just keep applying," he said.

Virgin Blue are currently recruiting for their 2008 graduate programs in both the financial and commercial divisions.  For more information go to www.virginblue.com.au and follow the career's links.
