How to research the job market

When you are starting to get itchy feet and long for a new challenge, there is several ways to research the current job scene.

Advertised job searching

This is the simplest way to test the market. Check display ads in the front of the newspaper as well as the classified jobs ads. Use online job searching using variations of your job role to make sure you cover everything.

If you a foot lose and fancy free, then don't confine yourself to one market. See what is happening in another city or state using location searching.

Networks

If you are not in an industry or professional association, now is the time to consider joining one. Many jobs are still filled through personal contacts. Industry and professional events are also a good way to find out who NOT to work for.

Recruitment consultants

If you form a relationship with a consultant you gel with, this can obviously be a great way to find out what is going on. A consultant's fee is also based on the eventual salary you land so they have your best interest (and theirs) at heart when it comes to negotiating pay. It is best to be as up front as you can with a consultant so they don't waste your time or you theirs with roles that really are not a match for you. Also, remember, the consultant is representing the employer so if you don't impress the consultant, you will never meet the client who could be your next boss. The consultant can also tell you about the history of the role, the company and your potential line manager.

Business and trade press

The business press is a great way to track who is hiring, merging, down sizing or expanding. It will also give you an idea of who is "hot" amongst the people to work for. There is also a trade magazine for nearly every industry and the State Library is a great way to find out what is available (and it's a free way to read). Newspapers also have specialist sections such as AustralianIT and Media in The Australian so get to know your newspaper. It's really important that you are up-to-date. Not only when researching the market and possible opportunities but so you sound impressive in a job interview.
