One-way ticket to a dream career in music
When Mia McLeod and her colleagues at Universal Music heard about the ‘best job in the world’ being touted as a caretaker on a remote island, they took it as a challenge.
“We thought, well, no it’s not,” she says.
McLeod and her team thought jetting around the world to all the hottest music festivals and interviewing rock stars would be a much better gig – so they decided to make it happen.
Universal Music is now offering the chance for two budding reporters to become the new voices of their consumer website getmusic.com.au for 2010.
The lucky recruits will be flown to ten international music festivals next year, including Coachella in the US, Glastonbury in the UK and the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan.
While on the job they’ll interview bands and artists for the site and produce blogs and videos based on their music festival experiences as well as their travels in general.
“We really wanted to grow some Australian interview talent because we’ve all seen Jabba and Ruby Rose,” McLeod says.
The ideal candidate would have confidence, self motivation and be a really good communicator, she says. The judges are also looking for “people who are passionate, interested and have a lot of knowledge about music and artists.”
Technical experience isn’t a must, but it could help. “Ideally it would be great to have someone who was quite natural (with technology).”
The successful candidates will receive a laptop, BlackBerry and video camera as tools of the trade and be paid a salary for every day of work. They’ll also be kitted up with a camping pack including a tent, sleeping bag and backpack.
It might sound like a dream role but it won’t be a complete walk in the park, McLeod warns. “They’re going to be under pressure to think on their feet and get a great interview.”
