Author
Name: Kathryn Eisman
Age: 27
Official title: Author (and TV reporter, Cleo columnist)
How long have you been an author?
My first book, How To Tell A Man By His Shoes, was published before my 21st birthday. My second book, How To Tell A Woman By Her Handbag, was launched last Christmas.
What sparked your interest in writing?
I’ve always had a passion for language and literature. From word games with my family to studying 3 Unit HSC English, writing has been a huge part of my life. For me, putting pen to paper is akin to having a best friend with whom you can share your inner world, with no judgment.
Have you studied at university?
While I studied communications, I believe writers require only the ability to employ language to transport readers to a different landscape, physically and emotionally. Writing is as much a gift as it is a skill, which requires passion, dedication and continual honing.
How did you get your big break to publish a book?
Once I completed my manuscript, I sent it to three publishers with little more than a hope and a prayer. To my great surprise, within two weeks I had received offers from two of our most prestigious publishing houses.
What advice can you give to aspiring authors?
If you are passionate about telling a story, don’t give up. Half the battle is committing to getting published. I recommend either writing the entire book, or learning how to write a proposal—a synopsis, a chapter break-down and an example chapter. Then, approach a literary agent or a publishing house.
What’s the most rewarding part?
Having someone tell you they connected to one of the characters, or ideas you posed, is deeply gratifying. My goal has always been to make people laugh and think at the same time.
What challenges you the most?
Writing can be a very lonely profession that requires lots of ``alone’’ time. I’m quite a social creature, so sometimes I find that difficult. Also, unlike many professions, writing is not an exact science, so you have to trust your instincts and ride the wave in inspiration, even when you feel like it’s dumped you on the shore.
Memorable moments?
I’ll never forget doing a book signing in New York and seeing my book on their shelves. Or appearing on Good Morning America, in front of 18 million viewers. I recently heard that a girl quoted me in her 21st birthday speech. That’s meaningful.
