Ask Kate Column: I often get asked about job roles for people with ability that also have a disability. To find some advice I had a sit down with a couple of experts from Breakthru Employment Solutions, CEO Ross Lewis and marketing manager Fayssal Sari.  For candidates there is a range of employment services available for free but you must be referred by Centrelink to an appropriate agency. Ross says some people fear being stigmatised and so hold back details, which in turn makes it hard for Centrelink staff to link people with the right agency so be as upfront as you can.  Fayssal says that the services provided by Breakthru and similar agencies vary depending on the disability. In some cases the person with the disability – the client – needs a great deal of support to get them job ready while others need the support once they have started the job and some need both.  Agencies will provide a consultant to go with the client for their first day and help them settle in, meet people and learn the ropes. Some clients need that ‘at work’ support for a period of time.  This column is also aimed at employers. As Ross pointed out, people with disabilities also want to go on holidays and buy houses so they should have the same access to earning income as everyone else. And employers get a good deal – reliable, loyal and dedicated employees. Workplace modifications, if needed, are federally funded and Ross also has plenty of research on the positive impact on productivity, morale and staff turnover made by staff with disabilities.  This is just a quick summary. If you have helpful information, please email me so I can report back on that.
