Focus on your own reality
Happy New Year. This will be a challenging year but there is no reason to take a ‘glass half empty approach’.
Employers will still be hiring and some sectors will do better than others so it pays to stay informed. There will also be more competition for jobs so it’s very important to put 110 per cent effort into job applications.
Make use of the free information in our CareerOne liftouts and on the CareerOne website in the News & Advice section. Our articles and tips are based on what recruiters and employers tell us so it’s the good oil.
Commonsense should also be your guide. Recruiters are the gate keepers to a great many jobs so don’t take your dealings with consultants casually.
I’ve heard of one candidate turning up to a job interview in silver tracksuit pants and another taking a mobile phone call about dinner arrangements in the middle of an interview. Wow, talk about killing your chances.
I’ve also heard from an employer how a graduate failed to turn up to an interview because he didn’t like the suburb the company was based in. The CEO was waiting in the boardroom and the job was a cracker! That grad blew it big time.
For the time being, the market has turned and recruiters and employers have the power so don’t leave anything to chance when applying for jobs.
The name of the game is good preparation, courtesy and punctuality. Professional employers and recruiters should offer the same in return.
