Happy New Year everyone. For many people, being fully rested and yet restless are not mutually exclusive. January is the time when people are gearing up for a change and they have had the time off to think about it. So what do you need to know to start your career research? Well, obviously looking at job ads is a great way to find out what is going on in the market.
Read ads carefully to see who is advertising and also to understand the skills and qualifications most in demand in your field. Do you have what is being asked for? Can you upskill? Also, review your resume. Does it need updating? Is it in a modern format? You can always get a professional to prepare your resume or you can use the Job hunting advice area of CareerOne.com.au and read the articles on resume writing.
There is separate resume advice articles on the site for school leavers, return to work mums, grads and experienced candidates. There is also advice on cover letter writing, interview skills and much more. Are you in touch with your referees? Can you find them? Do you need new ones? Also, start letting people know you are thinking of re-entering the market - or if you don't want to spill the beans just yet, make some general inquiries on behalf of "a friend".
Companies pay referral fees to staff to introduce new staff so it really doesn't hurt to put some feelers out. Is there an industry or professional association you could join to help you network and plug into the latest employment market trends. Also, what do you want to get out of your next role? Is there an employer you particularly want to work for? A little strategic thinking goes a long way when it comes to hunting for a job, so get cracking and email me if you have a question.
